Bottles
Glass in different shades of green results naturally from iron
impurities in the sand when just the basic ingredients (sand, soda, & lime)
are used.
Lightning closures have a clasp or toggle and use a neck tie-wire, a
lever wire, and a gasketed lid to make containers airtight. This is
especially effective for carbonated beverage bottles and for canning (or
storage) jars. Also known as "bail tops".
♦ TIP:To prevent chipping on glass rims and lids with lightning
closures, hold the lid down while unclasping or clasping the lightning
closure (the clasp or toggle), when you open and close the lid on glass
bottles and jars .
Airtight storage can be maintained by keeping clean the rim of the
jar or bottle and the sealing ring or stopper.
Sealing gaskets from should be washed frequently to keep them free of
matter that will prevent a good seal.
Corks (from tree bark) make a good airtight seal when wet. Bottled
wine, for example, should be stored on its side to keep the wine in
constant contact with the cork.
