Tips on Driving in Center City & South Philly:
The grid system of streets makes it pretty easy to navigate in
this area of town.
South Philly is generally considered to be the area between South
St. and the Naval Base, and between the Delaware and the Schuylkill Rivers.
Westward from Christopher Columbus Blvd. along the Delaware River,
the major northbound and southbound through street names are numbers, with
some exceptions. Beginning from Front St., then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. Notable
exceptions include "Front St.," instead of 1st St., and "Broad St.," instead
of what would logically be named 14th St. Broad St. is one of the city's
major thoroughfares.
Homes and businesses on eastbound and westbound streets are
numbered in sequential groups of 100, starting at Front St. Therefore,
between Front and 2nd Sts., all addresses are between 100 and 199; between
12th and 13th Sts., all addresses are between 1200 and 1299.
Similarly, all homes and businesses on northbound and southbound
streets are numbered in sequential groups of 100, starting at Market St.
A good directional marker to look for is Billy Penn atop City Hall,
conspicuously located in a center square at Broad and Market Sts. Most tall
buildings in the city are located in this area, generally referred to as
Center City, north of South St. and bounded between the Delaware and
Schuylkill Rivers.
Market St. is the division between streets whose names are
followed by North or South designations. Our address, for example, is
designated as 1006 South 9th St. because we are South of
Market St.
There is no directional mapping logic in the names of eastbound
and westbound through streets. So get a map. Or check the list below,
compiled southbound from Market St., if it'll help:
Market St. (to the train station & Schuylkill Expwy (Rt. 76) westbound)
Chestnut St.
Walnut St.
Locust St.
Spruce St.
Pine St.
Lombard St. (to the Schuylkill Expwy westbound)
South St.
Bainbridge St.
Fitzwater St.
Catherine St.
Christian St.
Carpenter St.
Washington Ave. (to the Italian Market and I-95, eastbound)
Ellsworth St.
Federal St.
Wharton St.
Reed St.
Dickinson St.
...etc.
A block is considered to be the space between two through
streets, so called through because they travel most of their
longer distance without barriers. A block can include a number of smaller
and shorter side streets; these may allow you to travel only
one or a few blocks at a time without homes blocking thoroughfare. A block
is usually a bit less than 1/10 of a mile; which makes it easy to know that
we, at 1006 S. 9th St., are about 10 blocks, or 1 mile, from Market
St.
In the area north of Market St. and between Front St. and the Schuylkill
River, the grid system generally continues as described above. East of Front
St. you'll need a map or a cabbie to help you navigate.
Happy traveling!
