The market was formed by Italian immigrants during the late 1800's, and is considered to be the largest working outdoor market in the U.S.

Today the Italian Market retains many reputable specialty stores and outdoor stands that have withstood the test of time. New immigrant groups have also found a home here, with shops displaying goods that are not readily found elsewhere.

Located on South 9th Street, it generally extends from Wharton to Christian Sts. Most stores and stands are open all day Tuesday through Saturday (until about 5pm), and also on Sunday mornings.

South Philadelphia historic 9th Street Italian Market

Inside one of the Italian Market's many butcher shops, that specialize in every meat imaginable.

Vegetable vendors at stands line the street, from early morning to late afternoon between Tuesday and Saturday, and until early afternoon on Sundays.

A wide variety of fresh seafood can be found in the stores and at outside stands.

Cookware, Italian bread, cheese, oils, groceries, variety stores, souvenirs and so much more.

Italian Market

Louise is a talented neighbor, who regularly leads tours of the Italian Market shops. She takes you behind the scenes that most people are not privy to, and provides you with truly interesting information.

Visit an authentic Sicilian pasticceria, see the street where Rocky ran, and receive authentic Italian recipes and samples, and shopping discounts.

In her book, she provides many traditional recipes, with histories and backgrounds on ingredients and the folklore that produced them. Lots of little tidbits and folklore make for interesting reading.

Individual and group tours are available morning and afternoon, Tuesday through Saturday.
