Tips on driving in South Philly

The grid system of streets makes it pretty easy to navigate in this area of town.

South Philly is generally considered to be the area between South St. and the Naval Base, and between the Delaware River and the Schuylkill River.

From the Delaware River, the major northbound and southbound through streets are numbered, beginning from Front St., then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. One notable exception includes Broad St., instead of what would logically be named 14th St.; it is the city's major North/South thoroughfare.

Homes and businesses on eastbound and westbound streets are numbered in sequential groups of 100, starting at Front St. Therefore, between Front and 2nd Sts., all addresses are between 100 and 199; between 12th and 13th Sts., all addresses are between 1200 and 1299.

Similarly, all homes and businesses on northbound and southbound streets are numbered in sequential groups of 100, starting at Market St. A good directional marker to look for is Billy Penn atop City Hall, conspicuously located in a center square at Broad and Market Sts. Most tall buildings in the city are located in this area, generally referred to as Center City, north of South St. and bounded between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers.

Market St. is the division between streets whose names are followed by North and South designations. Our address, for example, is designated as 1006 South 9th St. because we are South of Market St.

A block is considered to be the space between two through streets, so called because they travel in straight distances without interruption. A block can include a number of smaller side streets; these may allow you to travel only one or a few blocks at a time without homes blocking thoroughfare. A block is usually a bit less than 1/10 of a mile; which makes it easy to know that we, at 1006 S. 9th St., are about 10 blocks, or 1 mile, from Market St.
